LED Lighting

Light Emitting Diodes or LEDs have been around for decades. They differ from light bulbs in the way of producing
light simply because they do not use a metal filament to heat to a point that it produces light. In the case of
light bulbs, heating the filament to the point that it glows need a lot of power. LED lighting is
made up of diodes, meaning they only let electricity pass through in one direction. Since diodes are mainly
conductors and as light emitting diodes act on the same principle, the production of light takes very little
energy. The colors are dependent on what the doping on the semiconductor is. The first LEDs were all red in color
until they figured out how to change the wavelength of the light by changing the energy of the semiconductor and of
course the metal doping being used.
If LEDs are very efficient, why is it that we are using them for lights just fairly recently? Well the simplest
answer is that they simply were not powerful enough to be made more than indicator lights and no one could make
ones that produce white light. Now that the technology has ripened enough for LEDs to be fairly bright for their
sizes and now that white light can be produced, they are seeing more use as lighting. One of the main reasons why
LEDs are very good for lighting is their size. LEDs are quite small and therefore can be combined in so many ways
and therefore the design perspectives are endless. Plus they are very energy efficient.

For now when you hear LED lighting, it is mainly associated with stylized designs and look good
ornaments rather than simple and functional daily things. You often find LED lighting in restaurants or fancy
hotels and even coffee shops where LED lighting is very effective in setting a cool and modern ambience. You can
have LED lights behind certain wall pieces and they would be glowing along the edges or have them trail along
ledges that you want to accentuate.
Many desk lights use LEDs and modern gear almost always uses LEDS because of their efficiency. Modern car
dashboards and signal lights are often LED; even new High Definition LCD TVs use LED backlighting because of their
long life and low energy use and the light produced is very uniform if you can maintain a very uniform voltage,
current, and temperature. LED lighting can be installed in walkways or stairs or any pathway to give ambience and
just overall good looks. Imagine having your living room floor look like Michael Jackson’s Thriller. You can create
lamps that you can hang from your ceiling or make random things light up or simply as indicators. You can use them
to light up your furniture in very creative ways, like your DVD or Blu-ray collection rack; it will really give it
that modern look.
There are so many things you can do with LED lighting that the options seem to only be limited
by your imagination. But one thing is for certain, it can only bring more charm and modern design to your otherwise
drab environment.
